I actually talked with Jeff a little bit about this a while ago, from
a different angle (verifying write access to a file by trying an empty
write). The same conclusions would apply here: Should opening a file
for write without actually writing it constitute a modification (even
over NFS, a protocol which doesn't support the concept of "opening" a
file), and will anything likely break in subtle ways if the semantics
are changed?
