Oliver,

You still need the -a off option if you want telnetd to behave as it
does on the dialups.  Without any options it acts like a regular BSD 4.4
telnetd, which lets you login without typing your password at all.

Which release notes are you looking at?  In the E40 mail room I found
draft version 2 (3 Aug '94), which doesn't document how to use telnetd
on a private workstation.

The telnetd man page talks a lot about letting people login without
providing a password.  Turning off the login-without-a-password feature
still requires -a off.
