The dvi2ps program, although for some things ``perfectly good'', did a
generally poorer job than the new dvips producing PostScript output
(since it wasn't quite as smart as dvips), and had a number of
problems, especially with complex files using included PostSCript
pictures (and you can guess how important this is around thesis
time!). There are a few differences in the interface, however, but
most of them are small. In this case, what you want to do is run
`dvips -r file.dvi' where you used to run `dvi2ps file | lpr'.
OLC has been recomending dvips (available in the SIPB locker for a
while now) to people as a solution to several problems in dvi2ps for a
while now, so the people who work on the documents and suck are
generally familiar with it; this over-familiarity means that sometimes
obvious changes slip under people's notice. That said, doing `man
dvips' at your `athena%' prompt should describe this to you in detail,
and more. Also, it should be very helpful to look over the OLC Stock
Answer on using DVIPS, under the `LaTeX Stock Answers' (type `olc
answers' at your `athena%' prompt).
Since this seems to be not clearly mentioned in the OLC Stock Answers
on the new release, I'm copying this response to the maintainers, so
they can try to make the change more visible.
I hope this hasn't caused you too much trouble... Overall, I think
you will find dvips worth the few changes, especially once the newness
works itself out of the system (and especially if you ever need to
include graphics in documents!).
