What were you trying to do?
latex bar.tex
where bar.tex is a very simple latex file
What's wrong:
it can't find article.sty because the mod of
/usr/athena/lib/tex/macros/latex/article.sty is not world readable. should
be set to 644
I was told that this happens only on dialup. The cluster machines have
/usr/athena/lib/tex... on afs now.
