Comments do not nest. (Check K&R or X3J11. I do not have the latter
handy, but I believe it is the same.) It is not non-portable, just
sloppy-looking. A correct compiler will not reject the file, but a
good one should provide a warning. You are correct that it should be
fixed, for aesthetic reasons.
