What were you trying to do?
trying to figure out why lpr wasn't suppressing header pages
when I thought it should, but that's not important right now.
What's wrong:
On the sun, and decstation (and probably other platforms) the
lpr man page says:
A listing of available printers and their capabilities can
be found in printers(7)...
What should have happened:
Well, initially I was going to suggest that man pages
shouldn't lie, because I certainly couldn't find a listing of
available printers in printers(7); I couldn't even find printers(7)
itself. HOwever, I then realized that the printers man page, and the
listing of printers was right where the lpr man page said it was, in
section 7 of the manual...on the vax. It is left as an exercise to
the reader to guess how old the printers(7) man page on the vax is.
(Hint: it mentions the Xerox9700, which may or may not have still been
around when I arrived at MIT during the fall of 1989.)
