Yes, such processes really should be killed on logout, but we don't have anything in place that kills them immediately when the user logs out. If a workstation happens to be left unused for a period of time after a user logs out (unlikely these days), this cleanup will occur. Otherwise, there isn't any such cleanup. However, in Athena release 7.7 (coming in July to a cluster near you) such a cleanup will happen immediately after the user logs out, and you shouldn't see this sort of problem any more.
