Brian Meek from Novell told me about Hostinfo.exe, so I grabbed it to try out.

for a query on addc.cldc.chrysler.com it returned:

Desired host: addc.cldc.chrysler.com
Official name: dvdc.cldc.chrysler.com
Host address: 197.11.11.43
Host address: 197.11.11.109
Host info: IBM/MVS-TCP 2.2.1

But if I TELNET to our nameserver (a SUN Solaris 2.2 system) and use
NSLOOKUP with type=any I get:

> set type=any
> addc.cldc.chrysler.com
Server: cldnspr1.cldc.chrysler.com
Address: 129.9.242.159

addc.cldc.chrysler.com canonical name = dvdc.cldc.chrysler.com
> dvdc.cldc.chrysler.com
Server: cldnspr1.cldc.chrysler.com
Address: 129.9.242.159

dvdc.cldc.chrysler.com internet address = 197.11.11.43
dvdc.cldc.chrysler.com internet address = 197.11.11.109
dvdc.cldc.chrysler.com CPU = IBM OS = MVS-TCP 2.2.1
dvdc.cldc.chrysler.com text = "MIS_WKH=dvdc"
dvdc.cldc.chrysler.com text = "MIS_WKH_ALIAS=addc"
dvdc.cldc.chrysler.com text = "MIS_WKH_ALIAS=addctrm1"
dvdc.cldc.chrysler.com text = "MIS_WKH_ALIAS=addcftpa"

As you can see, you do a better job with canonical names than Solaris does,
but you don't handle text records at all!

BTW, I am behind a firewall so you are not able to access my DNS for any
testing. Sorry.
