- What did I think I was doing?
I was trying to run xtechinfo from inf (sparc classic) on
steve-dallas's (rt - yes, there are still RT's around,
unfortunately) X display.
- What do you think went wrong:
I got:
X Error of failed request: BadValue (integer parameter out of range for operation)
Major opcode of failed request: 51 (X_SetFontPath)
Value in failed request: 0x2
Serial number of failed request: 5
Current serial number in output stream: 7
and then xtechinfo started up.
- What do I think should have happened instead:
The shell script tried to guess which X fonts to use based on the
machine type. For details on why this is such a bad idea, go up to
Bill Cattey and say ``What is `Font Hell', anyway?''. And then step
back, quickly. :-)
We need a program to figure out what kind of display (size, depth,
visual, font type (???) etc.) and output this info in `a useful
manner'. I'm not sure what this means; otherwise I'd do it myself
(although I've no idea how I'd determine the font type); or where to
keep it (maybe a program that figures out the data and puts in
properties on the root or in the resource db, along with a program
to get each individual setting?). Sugestions (personal or
otherwise) are welcome. :-)
- Documentation references:
I know this came up before when the DS5000/133's went into clusters
and ez broke (I know this because I wrote it myself, but I'm not
sure where it would be now. :-)
