I would just like to say that I agree with Jay Ongg about how people
will use Resnet without more Linux support. I was on and using the LAN
Manager for DOS software for a month before I installed Linux. I found
that, as he observed, most of the time I telnetted to campus. In fact,
the only other program I used was FTP. I hated TechMail for Windows.
The problem is that the Windows progams are okay, but are slower to use
and have awkward interfaces. I am now running Linux very happily and
the only time I have telnetted to campus was to test mh! I can do
everything I want from my machine.
I think Resnet is great and is moving MIT in the right direction.
However, I also think that:
1) Linux will solidify now that version 1.0 is slated to come out
2) Linux distributions are really not that big of a deal. There is no
reason why you couldn't just endorse Slackware like everyone else.
3) Linux works... well. It crashes a lot less than LANWP in Windows and
Dos.
4) Without more Linux support, dialup machines will get even more
swamped as people plug in.
