obtain an xterm window
What's wrong:

none appeared upon startup, by using mwm's root menu, or by using dash.
I was unable to start sendbug. I got a shell in emacs (emacs starts
automatically on my account) but it was very slow. I was able to get
xcalc through the mwm root window.
What should have happened:
[Please replace this line with your information.] My dotfiles
usually start olc and xzewd, but they didn't start.
Also, it refused to send me zephyrs. (My dotfiles send me zephyrs upon
login and logout.)
After logging out and back in, all the programs except xzewd appeared.
The initial xterm window generated at login appeared but is
non-functional. It just displays a cursor without a prompt and does not
respond to entries. A new xterm from the mwm root menu functions properly.

I logged out and back in and the problem appears to be partially solved.
