From reading your bug report, I noticed that the From: line said
"The Unknown User-ID (6700) <intruder@MIT.EDU>"

This indicates to me that you were no longer listed in /etc/passwd file, and
once this happens, lots of things will begin to fail.

I would guess that you were logged into "pesto" multiple times and you
logged out of the first session. I know with multiple login sessions, the
session that adds you is also the one that removes you, so if you have
multiple logins, you have to logout of the first session LAST, otherwise
/etc/passwd will lack your entry and the other sessions will begin to have
problems.

If you were not logged in multiple times, something else happened such that
your entry wasn't in /etc/passwd, and that would require further
investigation.
