I tried this again tonight on the same machine. the first time I
tried it, instead of just displaying the fonts incorrectly, load
jumped to around 1.6 and the X server exited. The second time the X
server existed and the machine wedged; (I suspect it restarted too
many X sercers) rebooting `fixed' the machine.
