Problem running telnetd under 6.0R

As of about a week and a half ago I suddenly stopped being able to telnet
into my VS2 (meathead) when dialing in from home. A check of ps shows
no telnetd.

As an experiment, I tried invoking it manually and got the following
response:

Script started on Wed Oct 5 13:28:36 1988
meathead# /etc/telnetd
/etc/telnetd: getpeername: Socket operation on non-socket
meathead# exit
meathead#
script done on Wed Oct 5 13:28:44 1988

I have a copy of telnetd I made about a month ago as I was told that
was the only way to have it available when the machine is deactivated.
Just to be sure, I tried /srvd/etc/telnetd, and got the same result.
Just installed 6.0R this afternoon. The problem with telneting
predates the 6.0R install, but this experiment was run after the
install.

All this was working fine until about a week and a half ago. All of
a sudden my ability to telnet into meathead went away. Any ideas?

Thanks very much.

Noah

P.S. Owing to exactly this problem, I am reading mail here more rarely
than I'd like. To reach me in under 3 days, phone 576-9377(days)
     or 646-8278 (eves).
