I managed to reproduce your problem both on a Vax and on a DECstation.
I suspect it is also a problem on a RISC/6000, though not on the Suns.
The cause of the problem is emacs, which is not following the standard
for doing X paste operations correctly. Admittedly, xterm should not
die at the first sign of trouble either. In any case this problem has
already been fixed on the Sun, and will be corrected for the other
platforms as well in the next Athena release.
