Yes I had similar problems on the RS6ks. I think that was traced to me
starting xscreensaver wrong (with &). At least I haven't had that
problem on sn RS6k since. Later the same evening a public cluster sun
did the same thing so I killed the X server and that succeeded in taking
me back to the xlogin screen.
