CTRL-\ is actually usually the sequence used to send a SIGQUIT to a
process running under the terminal.  The error you saw indicates that
this is precisely what happened, and this is normal; the process
*should* be terminated abnormally, and dump core, as you saw.  There is
one odd thing in your report, however: stty -a seems to show the quit
character as being CTRL-| rather than CTRL-\.  Can you verify whether
CTRL-| is also functioning as a quit key?  If it isn't, stty is lying.
