What were you trying to do?
I was trying to telnet to husc3.harvard.edu, but I forgot to type the
domain stuff, and was working from the command line, and so typed
"telnet husc3"
What's wrong:
Here's the interaction (the "<mystery:~> nu?" part of the prompt is my doing)::
<mystery:~> nu? telnet husc3
husc3: <mystery:~>
So as you can see I got what appeared to be a normal prompt with an
husc3: prefix.
What should have happened:
Error message, something like "no such host"
