RS6000 320 still running .startup.X after logged out

I logged onto the RS6000 320 m11-113-4, but logged out again before my
.startup.X completed. The problem is that *after* the xlogin screen
came back up, my startup zephyr popped up, and then my .startup.X put
up a new background. Selecting xcluster from the menu and then
quitting put it back to normal.
In case it matters, my .startup.X is world-readable.
The command I use to start up zwgc is:
(zwgc -nofork |& grep -v "Error in XAllocColor" &)
and the command that sets my background is:
nice -15 xsetroot -bg red -bitmap ~/Bitmaps/tile_bath2
