I agree.
Regrettably this bug is present in more ports of compress than just that
for the Sparc.
I myself, have run out of disk space and had both files get trashed.
Someone should write a more careful version of compress...
(Someone surely has, but the UNIX system vendors have not seen fit to
incorporate it into their releases.)
