Beacon is now a maxine news server. The machine that used to be
beacon was a MicroVax-II running athena 6.0C. After Jonathon and I
both failed to get it to dump easily, we decided that `dump it if it's
easy' didn't apply, so we punted the `dump' part. I wiped most of the
machine last night, and we powered it down and moved it around to go
back to stock. Jonathon has probably already filled out the
greensheet for it to be taken away.
The problem I had was with trying to make a tar archive of it
somewhere. Using normal tar to local disk or afs (via ni) failed on
the first setuid file it found (no such file or directory on the
target tarfile). Using an old version of gnu tar (the new verison was
offline since that part of the cell was down) seemed to not have that
problem, so I started gtar'ing it into afsland with the
`one-file-system' arguemtn that was supposed to keep it from crossing
filesystems. Jonathon stopped that somewhere in the middle of
/afs/athena/software, I believe, having alreasy made a copy of the
srvd. (I removed this file; if you wanted a copy of it; sorry)
Jonathon tried too many times on too little sleep to get it to dump
across the net to the (low density, I believe) exabyte on hodge, a
DS3100 in the office, and eventually gave up. I'm sure he'd rather
tell you that story himself. :-)
When sipb-vax (old beacon's temporary name) put up it's last prompt it
had only an empty /u3 and a /site mountpoint to somewhere we couldn't
find (given that everything else was gone).
