I've received your message to Ademola regarding some difficulties you
are having with regard to remotely logging into some Athena
workstations in your lab.

First, you should know that the best way to get answers to your
technical questions is to ask an Athena User Consultant. The chances
are in your favor that they can answer your question, and (if they
can't) they usually can refer you to someone who can answer your
question quickly.

Finally, you should give a bit more information about the hardware and
software you have (it is unreasonable for you to expect me to know
what people have in their private clusters). For the purposes of this
question, I will presume that you have VAXstation equipment running
the 6.0C Athena release.

With the 6.0C software release, we had to move many files off the root
(that means /) partition onto the remote system packs (the /srvd).
Because we did this, you will find that some services (like remote
login and the like) don't work when the workstation is deactivated.
This is because they require daemon programs which we moved onto the
/srvd, and when the workstation is deactivated the programs on the
/srvd are not available. In order to fully understand what has
happened here, you should get a copy of the release notes and the
proposal which describes which programs are no longer stored on the
root filesystem. Presumably, you can ask Ademola to put a copy of
these in the campus mail to you.

Finally, in order to fix the problem you are having, you should remove
the links for /etc/{rlogind,rshd,telnetd} and copy the binary programs
for rlogind, rshd, and telnetd from /srvd/etc/ to /etc/

If you have any problems with this, please feel free to drop me a
line.
