/Doesn't sound like a bug at all, but just a (documented) difference between
the R3 and R4 X servers. Unlike R3 servers, R4 servers should reset
themselves when the last open connection is closed. At the point when
you run config_console, the console is the only thing that has an active X
connection open- config_console causes the console to close its display and
exit, so it can be restarted by dm. I believe this is what is causing the
X server restart you saw. You may want to put a call to "xsleep" (an
application whose sole purpose in life is to keep a connection open to the X
server for a given amount of time, and then die) before your
config_console to ensure the number of connections to the X server doesn't
drop to zero and see if this fixes it.
