We've got a question in olc about someone (debirgen) who has an intermittent problem with the workstation acting as though it doesn't get her passwd info. It happens consistently on the machine shim-sham (a decstation), but also on various public workstations (including RT's, she thinks). We've asked her to note which ones and when it happens. We've sat down with her and tried to figure out what was going on, had her get new dotfiles, etc. None of the consultants have been able to figure out what's going wrong. Any ideas as to what the problem might be, or additional things we should check to try to figure this out? I've included some additional information below. Since she's unable to use OLC directly, the consultants have been making notes in the log on her behalf. Thanks, Carla ================================================================ Here are symptoms of the problem: on login: 11:44 Session initialization completed. 11:44 get_message: couldn't find username to send zephyr notice When she tries to enter olc: % olc Warning: unable to get passwd information. Try logging out and in again. She is unable to print OR send mail when this happens. <24>shim-sham:~/letters % lpr -Pbud lettermom~ lpr: bud: Who are you? When she tried to send mail, I received mail from unknown-user (intruder@athena). This is NOT a dotfiles problem-- Derrick and I [Catherine] checked everything and they are fine. She also has kerberos tickets. She changed her passwd in hopes it would help; it did not. her passwd entry was added to /etc/passwd; user claims problem occurs on other machines, other platforms. She is a new user who rarely uses Athena, so it is difficult to get data from her. I will try to get in touch with her to do more diagnostics. ================================================================
