Centering of last message?

If you have a long list of messages, and you press down to get to the last one, it centers the last message(or at least shows it many rows above the bottom of the display area). It should just put the bottom message at the bottom of the display area. This just wastes space.
Also, is there a way to have it auto-scroll to the most recent message(a la vt behavior)? Having to press down to see the messages is kind of annoying, having them scroll up would be nice.
