I've started saving my panel.d subdir so I can restore it by hand.
It REALLY goes out of its way to screw you if anything wierd happens.
(Mind you, when I hand-restore the gnome subtree and log back in, panel
core dumps and restarts.)

I foolishly tried to run panel out of the aui locker so I could have it
when logged in from a non-9.0 machine. BOY does that break everything!
It loses all but netscape launcher Applets, and when I log in on a 9.0 system
that single applet's icon is toasted.

I wonder if there is some way to refresh the AUI locker so that it can
at least get panel to coexist with a 9.0 system. I suspect it's REALLY
not worth the trouble. Hard coded paths... jeez!
