I got some insight from another friend today:
* He agreed that with a black background, things are just too
dark. (Not everyone holds this view, but it seems to be a
majority.)
* A light blue background does clash a bit with the active
eazel decorations, but a navy blue goes okay. See
/afs/dev.mit.edu/user/ghudson/desktop4.png for a sample.
* The presence of a white console window makes the off-white
gnome-terminal window look a bit dirty.
The console doesn't look all that bad with a light gray background
(see desktop5.png), although I think it would look a lot better if it
used gtk widgets. Maybe if I'm inspired I'll make that happen.
(Yes, I am doing technical work in addition to playing artist.)
