I expect the problem is this: There is a race condition between
sawfish and panel. Panel needs to start up enough before sawfish so
that sawfish can notice that it is running under gnome. If it doesn't
notice, it fails to play nice with things like the task list and
panel. By speeding up your login, you exposed this race condition.
I think Greg is working on a way to put sawfish in Gnome mode by default.
