This is partly due to a bug we are experiencing here which will
reportedly be fixed by an upgrade. See bug #4975 at
bugzilla.eazel.com for details.
Once that's fixed, pressing the "Nautilus" button on the panel will
start a new window every time.
We decided to turn on desktop icons for the usability test (they are
not on by default). If Athena makes the same choice, I would hope
that the new default dotfiles would include starting Nautilus
automatically so that the desktop icons, as you suggest, Susan, would
be visibile immediately after login.
This would allow people to access their files by either using the
Nautilus launcher on the panel or by clicking on the "My
Computer"-like desktop icon.
The problem with editing text documents has also been reported as bug
#3272.
A full listing of what problems have already been reported to Eazel
from usability testing is available in the bug-aui Discuss archive on
menelaus (except for a few I'll be documenting as soon as I get back
to Boston).
