Heather's note puts me in mind of a novel solution:
Call them "Group" and "Topic" in gZephyr, and ADD those names
to the zwrite keyboard interface.
zwrite -c and zwrite --group and zwrite -g should all mean the same thing.
In the zwrite man page, we say "the nomenclature of class and instance
were how the protocol was conceived, but user's find it much more
comprehensible to think of 'group of people I send to (class)' and
'topic of discussion (instance) so we've added easy mnemonics for the
way users think about using zephyr."
It doesn't cost a lot to add the handle in the place the user keeps groping!
