So, I checked in stuff that allows you to run without session
management. Without session management the only programs that get
started are the ones listed under "Non session managed programs" in
the capplet.
There are a couple of issues with some standard things not getting
started, or getting started with the wrong arguments, but these will
probably work out. I plan to have a working set of programs by the end
of the week (I will only be working on this part time, as things
break). I will also be hacking in support for a default set of
unmanaged programs.
As far as conforming to GNOME standards goes, I talked to the people
on gnome-devel and several people seem psyched to have gnome-session
burned and rewritten for 2.0. This is not a terribly hard problem, and
is something I may do if I have free time in August. I think this is
worth the trouble, because unless we write it ourselves, the new gsm
is unlikely to support multiple architectures any better than the
current one. So by the time we release, if we are lucky, we will have
a completely new gsm which will dtrt[*] with multiple architectures.

we shall see.
