That would be me. My head was crushed by a few stampeding bison.
The deal is this: Owls made recommendations regarding putting the
Quickstations into the Athena renewal cycle. The hope was that money
would be spent to replace the Sparc 5's with a mix of Ultra-5's and
Linux boxes. The reason why we recommended against all Linux boxes was
that the port was too new, and converting all to Linux would screw the
people who run over to a quickstation to print out their FrameMaker
paper on the way to class. The price tag for new Sparc-5's was high
enough that Vijay decided to postpone some renewal, and just buy Linux
boxes for the fraction that were to be replaced over this summer. For
example, in building 11, 2 of the 4 Sparc 5 systems are slated to be
replaced with Linux boxes ASAP.
Bottom Line: Some of the quickstations will get replaced with faster
systems over the summer. Large numbers of slow systems will STILL be in
place at least for the next year.
