db1 is a mess, why don't we go with db2 or db3

So, I spent monday fighting with db1, and I have come to the
conclusion that it is a mess. While I think that I could get it to
build and work on Athena (at least solaris, I have not even touched it
on IRIX), this would require changing a great deal of the *source* not
to mention dragging in files from linux/netbsd and rewriting the build
system. Basically, db1 seems stuck on the free OS's, and I think that
we should leave it there. As far as I can tell from tearing open
SRPM's, everyone else thinks this two (they all compiled it by hand
and then just tar'ed it up into the RPM, as near as I can tell).
Basically, I think that we should punt it.
The reason that I was working with db1 at all were twofold. First,
there is/was a small issue with gnome-libs building with db2 (which is
what aui was using previously). I really don't think this problem was
that significant, I can probably fix it *and* get the patch taken
upstream. Second, there seemed to be some FUD about the sleepycat
license. Can anyone be more specific about this? I read the license
and could not find anything obviously wrong, but I don't read many
licenses, so I might have missed it.
At any rate, I am going to set aside db1 for a day or two to let this
sort out. People who are concerned about switching to db2/3 (or who
can offer advice between the two) should sent mail.
