I think you are inflating the risk a lot here.
Changing the panel does not mean that old configs can't be trivially
changed, or that old applets would fail to work. I think we are
supposed to be able to rely on old applets continuing to work.
If we put a lot of work into mc, then we'll have to do it again on the
new file manager. I don't think it's a huge amount of work to have to
do twice.
I think we should work with 1.0 in confidence; if there is a concrete
fear (rather than vague ones) then that's worth talking about, but I
don't see any concrete fears here.
