Michael McCanna and I looked into KDE on Debathena the other day, and we
were not able to induce any problems similar to those GNOME has with
switching back to older versions. This is unsurprising, since basically
every Debian-based distro currently runs KDE 3.5.x for some value of x.

Newer versions of Ubuntu have a kde4 package that uses ~/.kde4 as its home
location, and thus are unlikely to have any nasty incompatabilities with
older KDE 3 stuff.

So, at this time, I don't see a need to implement anything similar to the
Debathena gconf redirection hack in order to support KDE on multiple
distributions at once.

KDE seems to expect itself to be run on more than one machine with the
same homedir (various state files in ~/.kde are symlinks into /tmp with
the hostname as part of the filename).
