Hi Michele, 

It will be a little difficult to debug this over e-mail, but we'll certainly try.   Are you logged in with an account with administrative privileges?  Typically this entails you being in the "admin" and "lpadmin" groups.  During the initial installation process of Ubuntu, you created a local account with administrative privileges.  If this account was different than your MIT username, try using that one instead to log in an add the printer.
