Not really orthogonal to it, more like a heavyweight extension of it.
Cluster machines are going to get all of -workstation, -extra-software,
and -thirdparty. (I don't think there's a good technical reason to have
-thirdparty actually depend on -extra-software, but that's the general
idea.) The subpackages are there for solely for the convenience of
non-cluster users who may want a subset but not the whole thing.

Technical problems with the list, definitely. (I'd be curious to hear
more about the nfs-common requirement myself.) For additions and
deletions, while I'm interested and this list is definitely the right
place for the discussion, the buck stops with alexp.
As for vim-full, why not just add it to -workstation?
