Here is a revised statement. I made some changes, because "Dash sub-
menu of Dash" is awkward.

I also included the last line about contacting athena10@mit.edu, and a
Reply-To. If people feel strongly, the address can be olc instead of
athena10 (although Dash predates all of the current consultants).

I plan on sending this out on Wednesday, so send me any more changes
soon.

Subject: Changes to Athena Graphical Login Environment
Reply-To: athena10@mit.edu

Dear _________

During IAP, Information Services & Technology will release the newest
version of Athena: Athena 10. While Athena 9.4 (the current version)
will remain the dominant version in the public clusters through the
end of the Spring 2009 term, Athena 10 will be available to early
adopters and may be installed on select workstations in the clusters.
Athena 10 will be noticeably different from previous releases of
Athena, and many legacy features of Athena have been removed,
including the "Athena Dashboard" ("Dash") environment.

When Athena 9.0 was released in June 2001, the Dash interface was
replaced with a new GNOME-based interface. At the time, users could
configure their account to continue using Dash, and your account is in
this category. The Dash interface will no longer be available in
Athena 10, and users will instead see a GNOME-like interface. We
apologize for any inconvenience.

No action is required on your part for this change to take effect in
Athena 10 -- the intent of this e-mail is to inform you of this
upcoming change to Athena. However, because support for Dash is
going away, you are encouraged to switch to the current GNOME-based
user interface in Athena 9.4 to become familiar with it. You can do
this by selecting the "Re-enable GNOME" command from the Dash menu.

For more information on Athena 10, please see http://
athena10.mit.edu. If you have specific questions about the Dash
transition, please e-mail athena10@mit.edu.

Sincerely,
