Sorry for the confusion. gdm 2.20, the old mainline, supports 90% of what 
we need but doesn't set DISPLAY when running custom commands. gdm's svn 
HEAD, the new mainline, doesn't appear to have custom command support at 
all (but the docs still refer to it, suggesting that they're probably 
going to reimplement it before they switch).

Adding support for setting the DISPLAY (and related) environment variables 
would be a ~5-10 line patch to the gdm 2.20 source.
