The debathena install script addresses point 1. I'm not sure how recently
the two installers have been synced.
As far as point 2, we can prompt the user to /etc/init.d/gdm restart,
which should be enough. I think we also configure GDM to restart itself /
X on user logout, but I don't think that takes effect for the current
session.
There are other conditions under which we want to force a restart, too,
for instance if openafs-modules-generic pulls in the latest modules along
with the latest kernel, and we need a reboot for the kernel upgrade before
OpenAFS works.
