1. Those two steps could be decoupled; it's pretty much always safe to 
run 'update' (and 'full-upgrade -d') while the machine is in use.

2. To address the network load: apt-proxy per cluster, or bittorrent? 
(multicast seems to have lost its allure after the 1990s...)
