I'm considering submitting talk(s) to DebConf, the Debian Developers=20
Conference, on Debathena. The call for papers is below. Draft abstract=20
is less below (I think the title is wrong, but don't have a better idea=20
yet):

=09-Tim Abbott

Title: Debian Configuration Packages

The latest version of MIT's Athena platform, Debathena, is based on Debian=
=20
and Ubuntu. Unlike past versions of Athena, Debathena is actually a set=20
of packages maintained in near compliance with Debian policy, built for=20
all releases of Debian and Ubuntu currently supported upstream. This has=
=20
made Debathena very popular on laptops and other machines owned by=20
students and staff.

A key innovation of Debathena is its configuration packages, which=20
configure services like Kerberos for use at MIT. Unlike many systems for=
=20
managing configuration, these packages are designed to provide site=20
defaults, not take the role of the system administrator. So, anyone at=20
MIT can install Debathena on top of their existing system via apt to=20
configure Athena services and install Athena-specific software, without=20
sacrificing their ability to customize their machine.

In this session, I hope to briefly overview what we've done, and then have=
=20
a discussion of how Debian can make things like Debathena easier.

DebConf9 Call for Papers
------------------------
We invite submissions of proposals for papers, presentations, discussion
sessions and tutorials for Debconf9. Submissions will be accepted until Apr=
il
15th.

This year submission of a formal written paper for the conference proceedin=
gs
is again optional, though encouraged. Providing a written paper in advance
means that interested people can attend your session ready with ideas for
discussion, and especially helps those who find it hard to follow rapid
English speech.

DebConf talks will be broadcast live on the internet where possible, and
videos of the talks will be published on the web along with the presentatio=
n
slides and papers.

To submit papers, first register for DebConf as described in the mail
registration send to debian-devel-announce@l.d.o today. Then use the 'New
event/paper' button on https://penta.debconf.org/penta/submission/dc9 and
fill in information about your submission on the various tabs. You can use
the same interface to submit papers for DebConf and DebCamp, by choosing th=
e
appropriate 'track'.

Looking forward to welcoming you to C=E1ceres in July, the DebConf team

About DebConf
-------------
DebConf is the Debian Project's developer conference. In addition to a full
schedule of technical, social and policy talks, DebConf provides an
opportunity for developers, contributors and other interested people to mee=
t
in person and work together more closely. It has taken place annually sinc=
e
2000 in locations as varied as Canada, Finland, Mexico, Scotland, and
Argentina.

DebConf9 will take place in C=E1ceres from Friday 24th until Thursday 30th
July.

DebConf will be preceded by DebCamp, from Thursday 16th until Thursday 23rd
July. DebCamp is a smaller, less formal event giving an opportunity for
group work on Debian projects.

About C=E1ceres
-------------
C=E1ceres (pronounced like Katheres, with an accent on the a) is the capita=
l of
C=E1ceres Province. There have been settlements near C=E1ceres since prehis=
toric
times. Evidence of this can be found in the caves of Maltravieso and El
Conejar. The city was founded by the ancient Romans in 25 BC.

The old town, or Ciudad Monumental, still has its ancient walls; this part =
of
town is also well known for its multitude of storks' nests. The walls
contain a perfect medieval town setting with no outward signs of modernity.
For this reason many films have been shot here. The Universidad de
Extremadura and two astronomical observatories are also located in C=E1cere=
s.

C=E1ceres was declared a World Heritage City by UNESCO in 1986 because of t=
he
city's blend of Roman, Islamic, Northern Gothic and Italian Renaissance
styles, fruit of the many battles fought here throughout history. An amazin=
g
30 towers from the Muslim period still stand in C=E1ceres, of which the Tor=
re
del Bujaco is the most famous.
