OK, this is actually not an incompatability with my patch, but rather with 
the latest version of sbuild, which creates a directory under

/build/buildd/$USERNAME-$PACKAGE-$SVERSION/$TMPDIR

where SVERSION is the actual binary version number of the package.

The inability to run inside a path containing a ~ is totally a bug in 
libtool.  I don't see it with newer versions of the lprng package that can 
be built on newer platforms, but I think that this is because the lprng 
build system changed.  We should find out how big a problem this is for us 
(i.e. is lprng the only thing affected, or is everything else that uses 
libtool sad?) and determine how to proceed.

(the current state is a stock new sbuild so people can test; feel free to 
downgrade again if it inhibits your getting work done)
