Matt,

With the discontinuance of the Optiplex 755, MIT is preparing to
standardize on the new Optiplex 760. Unfortunately, it has
problems. The Ubuntu Jaunty daily live CD of today (and for that
matter the one I fetched back in January) gives a blank screen after
you select any of the live CD install options. Turning off APIC
works around this problem. (Perhaps by turning off HPET?)

Oddly, Intrepid installed ok except for times when it spews endless
amounts of console output issuing a warning inside the HPET code on
every clock tick.

Could you see if someone near you can verify LP 348694 which I have
just opened.

I'd really like to resolve this as quickly as possible. I originally
thought it was simply a matter of an over-verbose warning message,
but it seems that HPET is simply broken for the new line of Dell
Desktops.

Before I involve the Dell sales force, I wanted to do a quick check
internally with "friends and family." (I have CC'd the debathena
email list because those are the volunteers who are doing all the
heavy lifting on the Ubuntu Athena stuff this year.)

-Bill
