Ask your friend if his system has an ICH10 motherboard chipset.
Just this minute I tracked down a problem where the 2.6.26 kernel  
starts printing warnings on every clock tick for certain hardware.   
The Dell Optiplex 760 and the HP Compaq DC7900.
