Yeah, if you install the full graphical configuration it will try to use 
your Athena desktop configuration.  It sounds like you wanted to keep your 
graphical configuration on this machine but just have access to Athena 
services?

If that's your goal, you want to install the debathena-standard package 
rather than debathena-workstation.  If you only install 
debathena-standard, it won't have any effect on the graphical 
configuration.  debathena-standard is the recommended Debathena 
configuration for laptops.
