There have been several significant changes to Debathena deployed to the
Debathena repository in the last day.
1) The Autofs automounter for /mit has been replaced by a new afuse-based
automounter, configured by the debathena-afuse-automounter package. This
new automounter seems to lack many minor annoyances associated with the
autofs automounter (e.g. failure trying to stop the automounter,
Recommending various nfs packages, and being apparently incompatable with
future deployment of Athena locker development hooks). If you're
currently using /mit when you install the update (via aptitude
dist-upgrade), the transition will complete at the next reboot of the
machine (because autofs doesn't stop correctly). The
debathena-autofs-config package is now deprecated.
2) The debathena-msmtp-config package has been changed in an incompatable
fashion. Its only consumer, debathena-pine, has been updated to use the
new interface. Pine instances running across the upgrade will give msmtp
errors when trying to send email until they are restarted.
2b) The new debathena-msmtp-mta package has been created. It configures
msmtp as your mail transport agent (the key feature being that it supports
authenticated mail through outgoing.mit.edu). It is recommended in the
debathena-standard distribution.
By default, our msmtp sendmail will fail over to sending through
outgoing-legacy when valid Kerberos tickets are not available. You can
configure msmtp to fail when valid Kerberos tickets are not available by
setting DEBATHENA_SENDMAIL_AUTH=yes.
3) The Athena system dotfiles used on debathena-login and
debathena-workstation systems have been changed to remove lots of
unecessary or undesirable code. Notable changes that you might notice
include:
- We stopped setting CDPATH
- We stopped changing the default prompt; the default Debian prompts are
better.
4) We uploaded new versions of almost every package. Aside from the
things mentioned above, these uploads are the result of internal API
changes that shouldn't affect functionality.
5) Debathena packages for Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy are building and will probably
be ready tomorrow evening. We'll make an announcement when they are ready.
Let us know if you run into any problems resulting from this series of
upgrades.
