Hi Alex,

As Ubuntu 14.04 has reached EOL, I would advise you to try installing on
16.04 instead. (18.04 has a known problem where python-afs is not
available, causing debathena install to fail.)

However I suspect the login issue is something else. There has been some
longstanding mysterious bugs of the login session crashing on older
systems, which usually seems to resolve by creating a blank profile for the
desktop environment. You can try moving your ~/.config out of the way
(probably on a dialup), and see if you can log in successfully. Then you
can manually copy your configs back into the new ~/.config folder.

Best,
Lizhou
