STATELINE, Nev. =E2=80=93 There he was in all his radiant glory. Tony Romo,=
cat-eating glue grin and all, was strolling down the 18th fairway at Edgew=
ood Tahoe, within minutes of winning the 29th American Century Championship=
and hoisting a trophy he had lusted after for years. All week he had told =
everyone who would listen he was dying to win this championship and that he=
thought his game was ready...
When Pete Dye and Jack Nicklaus met with Sea Pines Resort=E2=80=99s real es=
tate developer Charles Fraser to discuss plans for what would be Harbour To=
wn Golf Links, both had yet to gain national acclaim as course designers. A=
t the time, Dye had designed fewer than a dozen of his eventual 100 plus go=
lf courses. During this Hilton Head meeting of the minds, Nicklaus had yet =
to design even one of his now 410 courses worldwide.
SCOTTSDALE, AZ =E2=80=94 It=E2=80=99s a scene repeated daily on the target-=
style desert courses in Arizona. A high-handicapper addresses his ball, kne=
es are wobbly as he peers at the 185-yard forced carry over a natural deser=
t dry wash filled with rocks, cactus, hiding places for rattlesnakes and th=
