Pine doesn't seem to work consistently on linux

Hello,
I use pine frequently. I noticed since the recent upgrade, that I would
get some weird permission denied error in pine. And that sometimes, my
profile for pine seems to disappear when I am writing e-mail. Is this a
feature of the new system? I notice that it's "alpine" and not "pine"
anymore too...
